Join Kay Slater for sunset watch parties at FLEET: Edmonds. The sunset watch parties are a part of Slater's Radical Silence project, designed to foster a communal appreciation of natural phenomena in a non-verbal, low-sensory environment. These gatherings create a space where participants can simply be present, experiencing the sunset as a shared moment of reflection and connection without the pressure of conversation or verbal engagement. Slater's sunset watch parties are not just about observing a sunset but about creating an intentional space that reimagines how people connect and the natural world, offering an alternative model for community interaction and accessibility.
Slater was introduced to the practice of sunset watch parties through the artist practices of χʷəy̓χʷiq̓tən Audrey Siegl, T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss and Anne Riley. They are excited to keep exploring this project related to silence and gathering, but do not wish to appropriate it as originating from them, and to acknowledge and appreciate the work of both Wyss and Riley, and for the honour and gift of Indigenous knowledge that they have been privileged to receive in their adult practice.

A stunning sunset with vibrant, warm, high-contrast hues in the sky. Silhouetted against the colourful backdrop are the branches of a tall tree and the outlines of string lights hanging in the foreground. Below the tree, parts of an industrial-style building and rooftops are visible, along with a lamppost.
