Program:
Open House and Tactile Workshop with Kay Slater
FLEET: Edmonds
Intersection of Humphries Ave and Rosewood St, Burnaby
February 23rd, 2025 at 1-3 PM and 4-8 PM
Join us for an Open House with Kay Slater at FLEET: Edmonds! This Open House day will include a Tactile Illustration Workshop with the Temporary Tactile Arts Collective from 1-3 PM, and an Open House and artist "talk-back" from 4-8PM. 4-5 PM is mask-on in the FLEET.
The Tactile Illustration Workshop aims to explore and share the intersection of tactile art, accessibility, and spatial wayfinding. This event, facilitated in collaboration with Kaymi Nakashima-Ochoa and Johnny Tai as part of the Temporary Tactile Arts Collective, invites participants to engage with tactile illustration techniques to create accessible representations of space and place.
The Open House and artist “talk-back” serves as a culminating moment to share the work developed during the residency at FLEET: Edmonds while amplifying the practices of non-verbal artists in the community. This event is designed to provide an inclusive and engaging space for reflection, dialogue, and visibility for diverse creative practices. Kay will showcase the results of their month-long exploration into accessible exhibition design, radical silence, and wayfinding, inviting visitors to engage with their findings and contribute feedback.
The Open House will include a special sunset watch party, allowing for a quiet moment of reflection and connection, reinforcing themes of radical silence and community presence. This evening creates a space for dialogue, collaboration, and celebration of the residency’s outcomes while promoting the value of non-verbal interaction and creative access within the arts. By inviting the community to witness and participate, Kay hopes to spark lasting conversations about inclusivity, accessibility, and non-verbal communication in public and creative spaces.
This program is free and open to the public. Learn more about Kay and their visit to FLEET: Edmonds on their visiting artist page.
